Major Media White Washes Yellow Vests Movement and Convoy to Ottawa: Ignores Racism, Antisemitism, Islamophobia, Homophobia, and Misogyny Endemic to Reactionary Movement

On Tuesday last week, "The National" on CBC uncritically profiled the Yellow Vests movement and provided a forum for overt hate groups such as the former Nouns of Odin now going by the name the Clann. There was little to no mention of the racism rife within the movement and no mention of the violent threats directed towards political figures on the left (or at least those the reactionaries consider to be on the left). As bad as this coverage was, news papers including the "Calgary Herald" and "Toronto Star" provided even worse coverage.

It was so bad, even Faith Goldy was angry, though I somehow suspect she was angry for different reasons:

The articles however provided cover for right-wing politicians to be able to support the event since they could now claim, citing these news sources, that the Yellow Vest sponsored convoy to Ottawa is solely about oil pipe lines despite what they themselves know to be true:

ARC and especially Yellow Vests Canada Exposed and the Canadian Anti-Hate Network have been exposing the racism and violent rhetoric behind the reactionary Yellow Vests movement in Canada for more than two months. We've done what the major media hasn't done; critically examine the ideology underlying this movement and bring to light the people behind it. Those include people like this guy:

Dave Selvers is the organizer for the Yellow Vest Convoy in Sault Ste. Marie:

In a "Sault This Week" article from early January, members of the local Yellow Vest group which included Selvers stated:
George Brown, an active member of the Yellow Vests wants to make clear that he and fellow Yellow Vests are not against immigration.
It just needs to be “done legally and fulfil needs for Canadians”, to help Canada’s homeless and destitute, Canada’s veterans and first nations, Brown said.
Yellow Vesters are not against helping those who must flee their countries because of violence and corruption, he added.
“Those in the middle east both Christian and Muslim need to be looked after”.
Given his association with the paranoid M103 protests though, one might pause to question Selvers' own (as well as the movement in general) commitment to protecting refugees and supporting immigration:

My own dive into his Facebook profile found a gun-obsessed, conspiracy-minded individual who revels in his hatred of Muslims and "non-white" Canadians and who has called for the execution of Canadian politicians:

Conflicting Ottawa Convoy Commitments Create Controversy

In following the reactionary Yellow Vests protests in Canada, there has already been a great deal of factionalism within that movement.

Now there's trouble between adjacent movements:

Now Bernard Hancock (who has blocked ARC's Twitter account even though I have never been in contact with him via that means) has a hate on for the reactionary Yellow Vesters even though he kind of, sort of, ran in the same crowd for some time; he was at an event organized by the Worldwide Coalition Against Islam in Calgary and an event hosted by Jeff Sharpe in Edmonton. That said I can't necessarily argue with him regarding the absolute embarrassment that the reactionary Yellow Vesters really are. However I wonder if he would even pay attention to them if not for the fact there is a Yellow Vests Canada convoy to Ottawa that is competing with the one that Hancock in involved with. Moreover, the Yellow Vests convoy Go Fund Me has already raised substantially more (in the $60,000 range) than the "official" convoy to Ottawa rally Hancock has raised (around $11,000 last time I checked).

Bernard isn't pleased:

The link to the article Hancock posted can be found here.

More from this thread:

This has resulted in a rather robust discussion:

Now I can't say one way or another whether or not Hancock's suggestions are accurate, but it isn't as if this would be the first time someone involved in the reactionary Yellow Vests protest was proven to be dishonest.

For example, Tyler Malenfant, the founder and administrator of the biggest reactionary Yellow Vests social media site, is once again claiming that the antisemitic and racist rhetoric he posted online in 2015 which ARC covered then wasn't him even though it was CLEARLY him. His lies are especially transparent in the "Edmonton Star" article published Friday that focused on extremism within the reactionary Yellow Vests movement:
The Yellow Vests Canada Facebook page lists a “Tyler Malenfant” as its administrator. The same Facebook profile was used to post comments on an Al Jazeera news article about a Jewish conspiracy to “destroy” Christianity and replace North America’s white majority through a concerted effort of mass migration.
When asked about his comments on the news article, the user of the profile deleted the comments and denied they ever existed. The user said the screenshots StarMetro took were fake.
I'll get back to this article in a moment, but recently I received a number of screen shots from the group Malenfant administers that I'd like to share:

The Mess That Is Hamilton

The Canadian Yellow Vest members in the Hamilton area continue to hold their Saturday rallies and they've been as wacky as anything YVC has organized so far.

On August 10th Yellow Vest and very troubled man Martin Brousseau drove his destined-for-the-scrap-heap bus onto the sidewalk towards counter protesters. Dubbed the "Hate Bus" by anti-racist and antifascist counter protesters, Hamilton police officers negotiated with Brousseau to move the bus for a reported 30 minutes before he finally moved that dilapidated piece of shit.

We've covered Brousseau previously:
However, even we were surprised at his boldness, given that he brought gear to detain people with and told the Hamilton cops he would do so, with anyone he deemed causing trouble.
After the Hamilton police managed to politely convince Brousseau to move the Hate Bus, they arrested a counter protester, claiming they had made a "disturbance." They now face charges of resisting arrest for an arrest which was completely unwarranted to begin with.

This also emboldened the yellow vest crowd, resulting in a truly disgusting display:
In attendance at the Hamilton rallies is a woman, who according to Brousseau's videos is Ukrainian, that goes by the first name Lily/Lilia. She has been spotted throwing roman salutes the week before, regularly sports Canadian Nationalist Party apparel, and engages in hate speech and violence. She attends other far-right events, including C3 in Ottawa and PEGIDA in Toronto.
Justin Long has attempted to denounce Lily, however considering his willingness to ally himself with other nazis such as Paul Fromm and Kevin Goudreau I don't see what the point is.

"Jack Smith"/Confederate Shirt Guy was also there.
Also confirmed in attendance has been Duke Willis:
The Hamilton yellow vest rallies have been problematic for some time, particularly with the violent attack on Hamilton Pride. That being said, counter-demonstrations have been growing and now completely dwarf the Yellow Vests. Interestingly, Duke Willis has put forth a strategy for sidewalk protests instead of rallies in order to avoid  counter protests.
I'm taking that as a sign that their rallies in Hamilton are floundering. The Yellow Vest movement has been fading away across the country, but their associated hate groups are still around and we'll continue to document the hate and violence from them.

Reactionary Yellow Vest Protesters Feeling Heat

It has been a while since ARC has discussed the seemingly marginally employed transient Steven Myatt, and I don't plan on going into a lot of detail. He's now living in Calgary and has unsurprisingly hooked up with local extremists, including the reactionary Yellow Vest protesters. Yesterday he posted the following urgent declaration:

Scared? Well, perhaps but not exactly in the way that he might want to believe.

The Yellow Vesters have been the subject of numerous stories in the media of late focusing on the racism of much of the membership as well as the calls to violence:

Here are a few of the more tepid examples:

I could post a lot more, but I really think readers should (if they haven't already) check out Yellow Vests Canada Exposed which has been doing an incredible job of cataloging the ugliness from the various Yellow Vests Facebook groups that have sprung up in the country:

They certainly have the bad guys spooked:

In any case getting back to Myatt, the reaction was as one would have expected:

More Extremists Associated With Yellow Vests Convoy to Ottawa: Christopher Hayes

Well it seems the efforts of Yellow Jackets Canada Exposed and the Canadian Anti-Hate Network (and perhaps to some small extent my own) have resulted in a statement regarding David Selvers from someone who looks to be an organizer for the convoy:

Well that's just lovely, however his Facebook post last night sort of belies that claim:

In the meantime, Selvers has taken to complaining about how he's the victim of a smear campaign for.... you know.... posting exactly what he himself wrote on his blog:

If you would like to be reminded about who Dave Selvers is and what he has written, feel free to click on the following links:

Not that Selvers isn't without his champions:

Deon R. Doiron has responded to Tweets by ARC, Yellow Vests Canada Exposed, and the Canadian Anti-Hate Network that both support Selvers and the convoy:

Then there's this:

And in further news that will surprise almost no one, Doiron is a supporter of Bernier's PPC and claims to be a "founding member":

Shocked! I'm shocked!

Well, not so shocked actually.

Getting back to the Convoy to Ottawa event, while it is nice that Jason Corbeil claims that Selvers is just a "bad apple" and not indicative of the beliefs of the others involved, it takes very little to find more examples of "bad apples" like Selvers.

With that, let me reacquaint readers with someone who hasn't appeared on the blog for a while, Christopher Hayes:

Christopher Hayes first came to ARC's attention when, as someone linked to the Soldiers of Odin through his own support and through his brother who was a chapter leader in Saskatchewan, he was arrested for making threats against the Prime Minister. Hayes was eventually convicted and spent roughly a year on probation.

He was also active in his support of the III% militia:

In addition to his anti-government (and anti-vaccination, btw) stance, Hayes was also virulently Islamophobic:

During this time he was drawn to and became a member of the WCAI (Worldwide Coalition Against Islam), soon becoming the Saskatchewan "captain":

Here his is promoting both the WCAI and their protest outside a Red Deer high school where members of the the WCAI harassed school administration and students:

He also spoke at WCAI events in Calgary, including the ill fated MEGA Patriot Rally that turned out to be considerably less than mega:

In short, Christopher Hayes appears to be kind of person, an extremist member and supporter of several hate groups, that Jason Corbeil says is decidedly NOT welcome in their convoy.

And yet....

Yeah, Christopher Hayes is one of the participants in the Ottawa convoy:
