Late last night in Edmonton a U-Haul struck four pedestrians and a police officer. The alleged driver of the U-Haul exited the vehicle and stabbed the officer multiple time. The suspect then attempted to escape on foot, however the 30-year-old male was soon captured (UPDATE: The suspect, Abdulahi Hasan Sharif, was known to the police). The police officer's injuries are thankfully not critical and he seems expected to recover. The condition of the pedestrians is as yet unknown.
Inside the U-Haul was what has been described as an ISIS flag. This certainly suggests that the event was an attack by someone who has been radicalized by ISIS propaganda however ARC is waiting until more information is forthcoming to make a final determination. If the incident was indeed an attack by an extremist motivated by ISIS hate propaganda, this writer would condemn it regardless of the ideology of the individual carrying out the attack. ARC has always condemned hate-based violence and will continue to do so unapologetically so long as I continue to operate the blog as well as after I decide one day to cease this work and pass it on to someone else. And I know that anti-fascists feel the same way.
