Fire at the Edmonton Pride Centre Believed to Be Deliberate

EDMONTON - The Edmonton Police hate crimes unit is investigating after a fire was set Wednesday night at the Pride Centre of Edmonton.

Emergency crews responded to a fire at the building, located at 9540 - 111th Ave. Wednesday at 10:33 p.m.. The fire was quickly extinguished.

Fire investigators believe the fire was deliberately set and estimated the damage at $15,000.

The Edmonton police arson and hate crimes units were assigned to the investigation, said Kris Wells, chair of the Sexual Minorities Community Liaison Committee, which acts as a bridge between police and the sexual minority community.

“Any time there’s an incident that targets a vulnerable minority community, you want to ensure there’s an appropriate investigation, if nothing else to rule out it was hate motivated,” said Wells.
