WCAI "Postpone" August 11 Rally Because None Of These Groups Can Stand Each Other

This article is going to be rather screen shot heavy. I think it's worth it though.

Hey there readers. You remember when Joey Deluca of the Worldwide Coalition Against Islam posted this article on their then website (which appears to have been deep-sixed) about their planned march in Toronto on August 11 and how they were looking forward to assaulting counter-protesters?:

Well, funny story....

I'll get back to this thread in a moment, however suffice it to say the August 11 WCAI rally does not appear to be happening. Now that doesn't mean that some Islamophobes and white supremacists still won't be showing up either because they didn't get the message or because they've already made the investment (Joey doesn't seem to care that some people likely spent more money than they have available in order to join his hate rally)....

....but it does appear to mean that no one with the WCAI will be showing up to Queens Park

Oh.... sorry. I should explain this. You see despite Deluca insisting on the rally being in Nathan Phillips Square in order to "take it back" he had in fact been trying to pull a fast one on everyone by moving the rally a few blocks away to Queens Park. I suppose he thought this was clever, except that he told every single person who contacted him for details about this plan.

So much for Internet security.

Anyways, we had some indication that the event was in trouble when we found this post on the WCAI event page:

By this morning, the entire thing had blown up with numerous groups who had previously committed to participating pulling out:

One of the catalysts for this was a post by the JDL's Meir Weinstein who didn't take well to the Charlottesville imagery:

The resulting discussion is rife with antisemitic and Islamophobic slurs, threats, and people like Ron Banerjee using the opportunity to settle scores:

WCAI Planning Rally in Toronto on August 11

It looks like Joey Deluca and some other members of the Worldwide Coalition Against Islam (WCAI) are indeed planning on leaving the warm comforts of their Calgary home and traveling to the big, bad, city of Toronto the Good to hold a rally in Nathan Phillips Square on August 11. ARC had mentioned this plan in an earlier article as well as Joey's efforts to fund the venture:

This past Saturday Joey had his BBQ which was attended by a who's who of the Calgary racist scene:

Okay, I guess only the Soldiers of Odin (SoO) who keep telling us all they aren't racists:

Danforth Shooting: Islamophobes Continue To Push Disinformation and False Information As Truth

It has been a little over a week since the horrible tragedy in Toronto's Danforth area occurred that resulted in the murder of a young woman and a child with more than a dozen injured. Right now this is what is known:

It was also stated that the shooter was born in Canada by people familiar with the family.

Other than that precious little is known about the motives of the shooter and, much like the shooting that occurred in Las Vegas, it may take months of investigative work and even then a definitive motive might not be discovered to anyone's satisfaction.

Then again, the police could always just rely on the beliefs of a 25 year old, unemployed, drifter:

I'm not going to include the screen shots of comments for these particular posts, but I'm sure the readers can guess their content easily enough based previous examples.

Suffice it to say though that very little of what Myatt wrote is actually true and what is true is wildly mischaracterized. For example, ISIS did take credit for the attack. Perhaps after an investigation it will be determined that the shooter was motivated in whole or in part by an extremist ideology, but considering that ISIS also took credit for the Las Vegas massacre it seems that Myatt is far too willing to believe a violent terrorist group that has been known to lie in recent years because it fits a narrative he had already believed and had been promoting. There's also absolutely no evidence to suggest that the shooter spent any time in Afghanistan or that he was a "trained killer" or that he was a refugee, but since they are so eager to place blame on the government for it's immigration and refugee policies, the shooter will be labeled as a refugee regardless of the truth.

In fact, truth be damned.

Steven Myatt is exhibiting a classic case of confirmation bias which certain fringe websites and partisan "news" have been keen to push for fun and profit:

Myatt isn't alone in his desire to jump to conclusions and to rely on erroneous information because it fits a narrative:

A recent Global News article noted the proliferation of false information (ie. lies) in the wake of the shooting that is being disseminated online. The article mentioned three instances where images were being spread that purport to prove the shooter was a Jihadist refugee who trained with ISIS and was allowed into the country by Trudeau (apparently via personal invitation). The problem is that none of it is true:
  • A photo claiming to be the shooter is of a 17 year old named Talha Asmal who joined ISIS in 2015 and who killed himself in a suicide bombing.
  • A man from the UK with the same name as the shooter who was sentenced to four years in 2016 for stalking a woman and engaging in a campaign of terror against her.
  • A series of photos that purport to be the shooter but are in fact of people who look nothing like him.
All three of these examples were found in the social media sites I monitor.

Far-Right Reaction To Tragic Shooting in Toronto Exactly As Expected

First, the most important part of this horrible tragedy is that two people, 10 year old Julianna Kozis and 18 year old Reese Fallon, were murdered and their names are the ones that should be remembered, not that of the murderer. As such I will as much as possible try to avoid using his name in this article.

When the shooting occurred, I was working on the article identifying the Montreal chapter leader of ID Canada. Initially the news that trickled in was that there were shots fired in Toronto's Danforth area. As time went on the full scope of the tragedy became apparent. Right now little is still known about the motives of the killer. A statement from his family suggests that he had struggled with mental illness since at least 2010 and was known to the police having been apprehended two times under the mental health act. A friend stated in an interview that eight years prior to the shooting the suspect had confided in his friend that he suffered depression and psychosis. Beyond this is all speculation at this point in time.

Sadly, the speculation and accusations began soon almost immediately as false news was being spread:

This blog has recorded many examples of the Islamophobes ARC monitors jumping to conclusions before more information is made available. I could provide the screen shots I've collected and posted elsewhere as examples, but I think a short and non-comprehensive list should suffice:

  • Joking about the mass murder of young people assuming that the suspect was a Muslim only to learn that the suspect was a far-right extremist (they then simply dismissed him as crazy).
  • Forest fires (including the one that devastated Fort McMurray) and prairie fires have been claimed as proof of a jihadist plot as Muslims have been accused of starting them.
  • The massacre of six men at a mosque in Quebec City is still being claimed as either a false flag or having actually been carried out by Muslim extremists.
  • The van attack in Toronto this past spring that left 10 dead and more than a dozen injured is still being claimed as an act of jihadist terrorism.
  • There are many who suggest that Humboldt Broncos bus tragedy was an example of Islamic terrorism.
There are more examples than these on this blog. Feel free to peruse at your leisure.

I think my views concerning the rush to judgement in these cases as well as the most recent tragedy are summed up best by journalist Steven Zhou:

All of this was prior to learning the identity of the suspect and it holds true after learning the identity as well.

I spent much of the day scrolling through the usual profiles and groups on Facebook prior to and after the identity of the shooter was known. It was like a car accident that one couldn't look away from. The usual rage-filled comments were being posted prior to the name being released:

  • Claiming that the shooter was a member of ISIS who had returned to Canada or was at least inspired by ISIS
  • Blaming refugees, immigrants, and multiculturalism.
  • Suggesting Trudeau and the Liberal Party had "blood on their hands" and were fully to blame (given that the shooter had been in the country since at least 2010, it's a bit of a stretch) with the more extreme demanding the execution of the prime minister and any Liberal or NDP supporter.
  • Demands to end immigration, deport Muslims and "non-white" Canadians, and to close down mosques.
I could post screen shots from any number of sources -- God knows disinformation was spreading like wildfire -- but I think a focus on a single case study should suffice:

Steven Myatt has become a bit of a nexus for spreading false information and whipping up his Islamophobic supporters into a frenzy. Examples of the subsequent comments are as follows:

Aftermath of Failed Ottawa Rally: Dan Dubois Explodes In Video Rant

Any objective analysis of the Canadian Combat Coalition rally on Parliament Hill this past weeks could only conclude it was an unmitigated disaster and no amount of spin can change that fact.

Dan Dubois is dealing with this failure with the quiet dignity we've come to expect from him:

Well, it's not exactly Marcus Aurelius' Meditations, but I suppose we'll take what we can get:

Well then....

.... that certainly escalated quickly.

Late this evening, Dubois posted a video unloading on La Meute, justifying marching with neo-Nazi Kevin Goudreau, attacking Robert Jones of the Proud Boys and taking a swipe at Ronny Cameron once again. Through much of the video he is barely coherent:

The comments continue the recriminations with Ron Banerjee playing the primary antagonist:

Where In The World Is Brandon Vaughan?

This is the eve of the Canadian Combat Coalition rally in Ottawa. Personally I'm not sure exactly how well attended it will actually be. No may be some III militia members, Proud Boys, Northern Guard members, and the Soldiers/Sons/Wolves of Odin. Yep, there are three groups now that "____" of Odin. Really, -20 points for lack of originality. I mean if they wanted to maintain the Norse imagery they could at least have gone with Thor or even Baldur maybe. A group that claims it will not be present in an official capacity at least are La Meute who have said that those groups participating in this event are extremists and that they want no part of it which is, I have to note, rather ironic.

Individuals expected include Kevin Johnston, Steven Myatt and Georges Massaad, Sandra Solomon, Ron Banerjee, and Meir Weinstein. Perhaps Ronny Cameron and Kevin Goudreau will also make an appearance, but I'm guessing that "No Show" Goudreau will once again no show.

Anyways, our partners at the Canadian Anti-Hate Network will be covering the event such that it might be. I'm not going to be in the office (i.e my basement) for much of the day but I hope to have a summary of the day's events tomorrow.

However, in thinking of the last big far-right Ottawa rally I couldn't help thinking of our friend, Proud Boy member Brandon Vaughan:

We haven't heard much from Brandon since he dropped out of sight after he was indicted for assault in Washington DC. Unlike February where he was arrested near Parliament Hill, it seems unlikely that he'll be present at this rally, but who knows?

Anyways, I got to thinking today where Brandon might be. Then I remembered that he contacted ARC last year on Facebook. As I was about to go on vacation I didn't have time to chat but I did promise that I would do so on my return mid August. Long story short I had completely forgotten about the brief exchange until today. I decided to see if he was interested in talking:

Unfortunately, when I tried to send the message, the following came up:

Seems he isn't all that interested in having that meeting he wanted back on July 10, 2017.

If anyone has any information at all regarding Brandon Vaughan, ARC would be very interested in hearing back from you.

Ronny Cameron and Steven Myatt are Sad

Sometimes being a fringe far-right social media personality isn't all that it is cracked up to be.

For example, self-proclaimed white nationalist (who still insists he isn't a racist because his girlfriend is black) was planning on holding a rally in Toronto on July 22 with the provocative, though unoriginal title, "White Is A MYTH." However very few actually committed to attending and he received a significant amount of blow back from anti-racists and some far right members who have decided that Ronny is poison and damaged their rep.... such that it is. Bryan Trottier of English La Meute ordered members of that group not to attend so that their photos wouldn't appear on this blog, though given the comments it really does seem to be a matter of public image for at least some of the membership since they appear to support the underlying premise:

Well, the abuse seems to have discouraged Ronny who has decided to take his ball and go home.... where he will continue to post chats of himself and his fellow racists which he believes passes for journalism:

Not surprisingly, Bryan Trottier is claiming responsibility for this turn of events:

It's funny they should mention "No Show" Goudreau because he figures into this update as well.

The Far Right Continues to Embrace Anti-Democratic Ethnic Nationalism and Authoritarianism (With Northern Alliance Cameo)

It has been an interesting week in the news. Donald Trump attacks traditional allies including Canada (specifically the Canadian prime minister) and his supporters in this country eat it up. Some of them have openly advocated for the invasion of the country to remove the Liberal government by force. Others "merely" want him to impose punitive tariffs on the country so that Canadians are made to suffer for the folly of electing the Liberals. Most of those self-described "patriots" ARC keeps an eye on unironically continue to refer to Justin Trudeau as a traitor. In the meantime these same "patriots" celebrate when Trump refers to a man who inherited his dictatorship from his father and grandfather and who's government is responsible mass execution of dissidents and the imprisonment of anyone who is believed to oppose the regime as being "tough" but who still "loves his people."

Really though, none of this is at all surprising as these elements of the far right in Canada, the United States, and many other countries have openly embraced ethnic nationalism and authoritarianism despite still claiming to favor democratic freedoms.... so long as those democratic freedoms are only afforded to people who look and think like they do.

I recently read a very interesting article that discussed the phenomenon in the United States. Research indicates that intolerance of minorities cause much of the majority population (white) to reject the principles of democracy when it is seen as benefiting otherwise marginalized peoples and results in a willingness to embrace authoritarian forms of control that will maintain their dominance even in the face of demographic changes:
A new study, however, suggests that the main threat to our democracy may not be the hardening of political ideology, but rather the hardening of one particular political ideology. Political scientists Steven V. Miller of Clemson and Nicholas T. Davis of Texas A&M have released a working paper titled "White Outgroup Intolerance and Declining Support for American Democracy." Their study finds a correlation between white American's intolerance, and support for authoritarian rule. In other words, when intolerant white people fear democracy may benefit marginalized people, they abandon their commitment to democracy.
Miller and Davis used information from the World Values Survey, a research project organized by a worldwide network of social scientists which polls individuals in numerous countries on a wide range of beliefs and values. Based on surveys from the United States, the authors found that white people who did not want to have immigrants or people of different races living next door to them were more likely to be supportive of authoritarianism. For instance, people who said they did not want to live next door to immigrants or to people of another race were more supportive of the idea of military rule, or of a strongman-type leader who could ignore legislatures and election results.
The World Values Survey data used is from the period 1995 to 2011 — well before Donald Trump's 2016 run for president. It suggests, though, that Trump's bigotry and his authoritarianism are not separate problems, but are intertwined. When Trump calls Mexicans "rapists," and when he praises authoritarian leaders, he is appealing to the same voters.
Given demographic changes, the far right find themselves in a bit of a bottle-neck so they have had to be much more creative in maintaining control, and this often means subverting the most basic of democratic practices, the vote:
White people continue to decrease as a percentage of the U.S. population; at some point, it's going to be impossible to win a national, democratic American election with a platform that alienates people of color. The GOP, seeing their coming demographic apocalypse, has pushed voter ID laws and other barriers to voting to try to prevent black and other minority voters from getting to the polls. In Wisconsin, Republican Governor Scott Walker even attempted to delay elections for state seats that he believed Democrats would win.
There are, of course, even more extreme positions:
Miller and Davis' paper quotes alt right, neo-fascist leader Richard Spencer, who in a 2013 speech declared: "We need an ethno-state so that our people can ‘come home again’… We must give up the false dreams of equality and democracy." Ethnic cleansing is impossible as long as marginalized people have enough votes to stop it. But this roadblock disappears if you get rid of democracy. Spencer understands that white rule in the current era essentially requires totalitarianism. That's the logic of fascism.
We've been hearing more and more about the desire to create an "ethno-state" here in Canada from a number of groups and individuals including Faith Goldy and Ronny Cameron. The patently undemocratic attitudes that would deny certain Canadians their democratic rights and create a tiered system of citizenship was also proposed by Steven Myatt recently:

Yeah, I know the last few articles have been a bit Myatt-centric. Just hear me out on this one.

We can laugh (and I did) about the clumsiness of Myatt talking about running "in politics" as well as the fact that this is a position that is so patently unconstitutional the courts would strike such a law down immediately (this assuming that Myatt would ever find himself in a position to enact such a law which seems less likely than me beating Justify in a footrace). It would also ironically disallow the first two prime ministers of the country from being involved in politics as well as numerous other Canadians who have emigrated from somewhere else.

But let's be honest here. Myatt is NOT talking about someone who looks like this:

Conservative MP Tom Kmiec, July 31, 1981 in GdaÅ„sk, Poland
Myatt IS talking about someone who looks like this:

NDP leader Jagmeet Singh, born January 2, 1979 in Scarborough, ON
The truth of this can be seen in one of Myatt's responses:

Well, when it comes to the House of Commons and the Senate federally, there were a total of 56 who are citizens of Canada through naturalization. However it is more clear that Myatt thinks that some people "look" Canadian and others don't. Considering he had 46 people seemingly agreeing with him, it seems that there are others who feel the same way.

One of those people is someone we haven't seen in a long, long, time:

That would be Tyler Chilcott, formerly of the now defunct neo-Nazi Northern Alliance based out of London, ON:

Jason KING, David RUUD, WINNICKI, Tyler CHILCOTT,
Tomas SZYMANSKI at Zundel demo in front of Metro West
On the archived website, Chitcott had published articles with titles such as "Wholistic Racialism", "Please Rise and Sing", and "The Native Conflict" as well as some really horrible poetry.

Congratulations Steven. Tyler Chilcott likes the cut of your jib.

The first person who posted "Blood and Earth" hearkens to the "Blood and Soil" ethnic nationalism heard at the Charlottesville rally last summer and, even more prescient,  was a slogan used by the Nazis (Blut und Boden).
