Yellow Vest Extremists: Two Case Studies From Edmonton and Calgary

I've been offline -- at least on the blog -- for over a week now in part due to finishing up some work-related projects (the work I'm actually paid to do), prepping for the holidays, and a long, long, LONG, drive back to the mother province to visit my family; ma has been dutifully fattening me up with cookies and nanaimo bars while pa has been providing home brewed beer at trying to engage me in discussing an activity known as "sports." Still, I have been keeping abreast of at least some of the activities the far right have been engaging in.

Last Saturday another series of Yellow Vest protests occurred. Fewer cities and towns appeared to have participated and the numbers were down in all cases while a number of venues saw an increase in the number of counter-protesters. Online the infighting and factionalism has been growing as participants sling insults at each other almost as much as they do towards the Liberal government in Ottawa and Notley government in Edmonton. Also, while there had been some effort to minimize the number of violent threats on the main Yellow Jacket Facebook pages, those efforts appear to have collapsed.

It was inevitable that this new movement would attract mainly the same faces (Steven Myatt, Ron Banerjee, Georges Massaad, Faith Goldy, Georges Hallak, etc) and groups (Soldiers of Odin, Northern Guard, Storm Alliance, La Meute, Canadian Combat Coalition, III%ers etc) I've been seeing at these protests the past number of years in addition to some newer, though still familiar, movement such as those who are associated with the QAnon conspiracy theory(s). Two of the faces associated with the Yellow Vests will be familiar to readers and include one more recent addition as well as someone who frequented the days of ARC Classic. While the initial momentum in much the rest of Canada appears to be waning as the attention span of the supporters diminishes and the weather turns colder, Alberta is still quite active.

In Edmonton the Yellow Vest protesters were outmaneuvered by the counter-protesters who showed up in larger numbers equaling or even perhaps slightly surpassing the Yellow Vest reactionaries, last week, the previous weekend saw a large number of far-right extremists show up including members of the Wolves of Odin. Now ARC readers will be familiar with this group as it used to be the Edmonton chapter of the Soldiers of Odin before they were compelled to change their name by the mother hate-group in Finland due to negative media attention. Prior to the name change the SoO were the focus of a story involving members of the hate-group hobnobbing with members of the United Conservative Party. Among those who attended the UCP event as well as the Yellow Vests protest on December 15 (where a journalist was roughed up, btw) was this fella:

Alberta Has Declared Dean "Sovereign" Clifford To Be A Vexatious Litigant

I've occasionally wondered what the self-proclaimed Wolverdean has been up to since he was released from prison after having received a three years sentence on drugs and weapons charges related to his "freeman-on-the-land" pseudo-legal woo. Upon his release Dean was relatively quiet and wasn't the tax avoiding go-to guru he had been prior to his incarceration, so much so that I stopped paying attention to him and as a result missed this update from November:

Dean Clifford started promoting himself as a freeman-on-the-land guru in earnest back in 2012. At the time we (when I could still say "we") at ARC teased an upcoming article focused on Dean which resulted in this reply:

Bring it on you communist mother fuckers. I have room for one more target, and my organization is MUCH larger and world-wide. Every freedom loving man and woman on this planet despises groups like you who try to stifle societies and individual freedoms with communist oppression and a police state of government control and laws.
There's 10 of you in a room on welfare somewhere on Canada. This will backfire worse than the smear sHit Piece "The National" did. Of course, I'll be shocked if you actually allow this comment to be posted. Bring on the poo flinging, and violence, because that is all you people are capable of.
Your smears are pathetic, your followers are so intellectually stagnant that it is terrifying, and you're all worse 'dead-beats' than the people you claim to hate. You're motto could not be more perfect to explain your organization, "We are against hate, and we hate anyone who doesn't go along with that." You must be the dumbest fuckers alive, a literal living oxymoron.
I notice every single one of your staunch supporters hides and even posts as anonymous. Yeah, you must all truly believe in what you do, and most certainly are willing to assume liability for your statements and claims. Attach a face to your smear, you gutless shitheads.
Every one of your front page stories is published by a fag who thinks he's a vampire. IS there more than one person even on this site? Oh man, this is going to be EPIC, I cannot wait!
Talk soon ass-clowns.
P.S. "intellectually on par with that of the Occupy Movement." Now that was just plain insulting, they're about as intelligent as you people, you are all a celebration of underachievers.
Suffice it to say we never did actually "talk soon" and Dean's attempt to intimidate ARC failed spectacularly. What Dean was trying to stop ARC from publishing (my own laziness resulted in not publishing much sooner) was his long history of posting on the American hate-site Stormfront:

Here are a few relevant posts:

We also learned that Dean was in continual correspondence with former Aryan Guard member (and man who spent time in prison on hate crime charges) Bill Noble:
Some of the exchanges indicate that Dean was aware that Aryan Guard leader Kyle McKee, then a suspect in an attempted murder targeting a member of a breakaway hate group (who would later be convicted on murder charges himself), was apprehended in Winnipeg while hiding out at Noble's residence.

Man Who Founded Short-Lived Hate Group Running For Mayor in Manitoba Town

We have the fine folks in Winnipeg with FF1 to thank for this tip.

So far we've seen a number of examples of far-right individuals running for mayor in major cities in Ontario. Toronto has Faith Goldy, James "ew!" Sears, and Chris Brosky (who has the added distinction of spending time in an American prison for a racially-based killing). In Mississauga and Hamilton yapping poodle Kevin Johnston and Paulie Fromm are running respectively. However we also suspected there might be a few who were running in smaller communities that we had yet to come across.

That brings us to Ryan Brady who is running for mayor in the town of Thompson, Manitoba:

Second mayoral hopeful, second incumbent councillor registered as municipal election candidates
With less than 24 hours to go before the nomination period ends, Thompson has a race for the mayor’s position for the time being, with Ryan Brady having put his name forward to run against current councillor Penny Byer, who announced her intention to run back in May.
and
Bumper crop of 35 candidates for 2018 municipal election, including four wannabe mayors
It will be a four-way race for mayor in the Oct. 24 election, with three of the current councillors – Penny Byer, Colleen Smook and Ron Matechuk – seeking to become the head of council, with Ryan Brady also in the running.
As it turns out, Brady had come to ARC's attention back in 2009 when he attempted to help fill the vacuum left by the temporary absence of the Aryan Guard while it's founder Kyle McKee was awaiting trial for attempted murder; he eventually pleaded to lesser charges and upon release the Aryan Guard "patched over" to Blood & Honour.

The identity that the Ryan Brady running for mayor in Thompson is Ryan Brady who posted on Stormfront under the username "honoryourlife" is confirmed here:

Top photo posted to Stormfront by Brady in 2009; bottom two posted to Facebook by Brady in 2018
Now it has been a number of years since Brady was active on Stormfront. For example, this is his last post:

As such he may not hold the same views that he once held. However, considering he was a sustaining member of Stormfront while active (meaning that he financially supported them) and his posts include the following, I think that as a candidate for public office Ryan Brady needs to explain himself:

Case Study: A Look At Steven Myatt's Supporters

It appears that the article posted on Sunday showing the federal Conservative leader chatting with Steven Myatt (member of the white nationalist and increasingly antisemitic Northern Guard) while at the UCP's first AGM has garnered some significant interest if the ol' Twitter machine can be believed. One individual did make a comment that is certainly worthy of merit:

That is a completely fair observation. In fact here on this blog we've (I can write "we" again!) noted a few occasions where prominent politicians as well as law enforcement have been photographed with boneheads who, while known to us, wouldn't necessarily be well known outside this particular subculture:

However, there are some differences. Jon Latvis had been out of the public eye for close to 20 years when he had his photograph taken with Rob Ford. In the case of McKee, he purposely concealed his identity and his intentions in an effort to embarrass Justin Trudeau. And as for police and city officials being photographed with the Soldiers of Odin.... well.... as that hate group had been in the news frequently for the past two years this was at best profoundly stupid and careless and at worst....

In any case, in none of these situations did the haters have a discussion about their ideology or their plans and attempt to garner support from the politician they were photographed with. Myatt did and claims to have received at least tacit support from politicians he stated are aware of his efforts:

Could this be Myatt blowing smoke up his supporters' asses? Sure, but it is a claim that is worth some investigating.

What is certain is that the subculture we at ARC are interested in are very supportive of Myatt's efforts to have Trudeau charged, arrested, tried, and convicted of treason (because, you know, Muslims). One of those figures is this fella:

You know when you hold views that Kevin "No Show" Goudreau can get behind, you really need to start re-evaluating your entire life:

Yes, because Goudreau is a well adjusted individual....

Sigh....

Most of the people who are supporting Myatt's quixotic quest though are not the cartoonish caricature that "No Show" Goudreau is. Yes they hold bigoted views and are willing are easily manipulated, but they certainly wouldn't stand out in public per se. Really, they are your uncle who spouts of conspiracy theories at family events like Thanksgiving or your cousin you haven't seen in years (but is still a Facebook "friend") who continually shares Debate Post articles or memes about how refugees are a drain on the economy.

I think that's why I find this group to be among the more interesting to look at what motivates them.

There were a few people who "liked" Goudreau's two comments. One of them is Beau Welling of the Alberta Threepers who was in the news not long ago and who did not like it one bit:

A second person is Katy Latulippe, leader of the Quebec chapter of the Soldiers of Odin which was also recently profiled on ARC as a result of their open alliance with the overtly racist Atalante:

The third is a relatively new figure. Pako Dellaire is Myatt's treasurer responsible for the money that has been collected.

Wait, you remember Myatt explicitly stating that he wouldn't be asking for donations? There's a perfectly good response to that and apparently it is shut up and don't look at the man behind the curtain.

Currently there's a Go Fund Me page that has been set up that Dellaire is acting as the administrator:

While Myatt is receiving support from the likes of Goudreau, Welling, Latulippe, and members of groups like the World Wide Coalition Against Islam, Pegida Canada, and the Northern Guard, most of his support is coming from people like Dellaire.

Now people like Dellaire always existed, but if I am to put my pop psychology hat on the 24 hour news cycle and social media have, to use an overused term, radicalized them. Despite the world being safer and more stable, they were convinced by a constant stream of negativity that the world was in chaos. Social media reinforced this belief through actual fake news being disseminated as easily as hitting the share button but with no critical thought; if it supports my bias, it must be true and any evidence that would suggest that the information is incorrect can be dismissed.

Case in point. Many of these people believe that the UK (and Europe in general) is in collapse. They point specifically at the rare, but widely covered, tragedies that have occurred. One often hears or reads "look what's happening in Europe" from people who may not have even left this continent and have no conception of what life in Europe is actually like and ho much safer it is there than in Trump's America or Harper's Canada. They also have no conception of history. After a bombing that took place in the UK, many of these people speak and write about how "this never happened" before the "Muslims" emigrated. If they actually did some research they would find that in the 1970s through the late 1990s, there were often weekly bombings that took place in major cities in the UK which resulted in far more deaths.... and those engaged in these terrorist acts were at least nominally Christian (the Roman Catholic IRA and the Protestant paramilitaries).

The result of this constant stream of negativity, combined with the bigotry that existed already at least in a portion of this group, is that they are terrified. In large part this terror is based on a fiction, but it is also based on their fear of demographic changes in the western world. At one time it didn't matter because, since they were the majority and privileged as a result, it didn't affect them directly. Now these same people find themselves competing on a even playing field and, not able to adapt, see themselves as falling behind. To paraphrase a statement I recently heard, to people who had always gotten ahead due to privilege, equality feels like oppression to them now.

Seeing a group of frightened people, demagogues are able to stoke those fears even further and turn them against scapegoats. Your struggles are because of "those" people who speak in accented English. "Those" people who follow a different religion are invaders. Your child might find himself working for an immigrant, as if that is a bad thing. And these demagogues -- Trump, KaczyÅ„ski, Putin, Orbán, Duterte, Le Pen, and others -- have been very good at weaponizing this fear.

In this country, the animus of this group is being = directed currently at Prime Minister Trudeau as well as provincial leaders such as Premier Notley and Wynne. Since Myatt's efforts are focused on Trudeau, we'll look at him specifically.

Myatt has a Facebook group specifically created for those who are supporting his petition efforts. Recently one of the administrators posed a rather interesting question, not in and of itself but because of the responses that resulted:

The responses were fascinating in that they essentially claim that every negative thing, real or not, is Trudeau's fault. They claim he is directly responsible their own physical and mental health problems. He is responsible for one individual's bankruptcy and one woman's inability to support herself on an income she claims is more than $70,000. He is responsible for any crime committed in Canada ("never happened when Harper was Prime Minister") Some ironically claim that they feel so unsafe in the country that they feel they may need to flee while at the same time condemning government for supporting refugees who are characterized as cowards for escaping a war zone. Of course the fear of Muslims and "sharia" law is prevalent throughout, but also a more generalized fear of "the Other" pervades the thread. And there's the desire for violence to rectify their concerns. Some dream of political assassinations while others hope for a civil war.

There is also the hope for a savior. Someone who will deliver them from the danger that they believe exists (despite crime being at or near an all time low). Sometimes that savior is the Christian god who they pray will smite their enemies in a very Old Testament sort of way. Some pray for deliverance invoking the names of Donald Trump and Steven Myatt.

And it is their desire to submit to the demagogue in the form of Trump, Myatt, or another person, someone who would weaponize their fear for their own purposes (power, wealth, fame), which I find to be the most disquieting part of this thread:

Calgary Soldier of Odin Leader Posts Antisemitic Memes and Linked to Overt Racists

It's interesting what one finds when one turns over a few stone.

Now it isn't entirely surprising that members of the Calgary Soldiers of Odin would be present. Though the hate group no longer exists as a national organization, there are still remnants in some cities in the country including Calgary. Truth be told, I haven't been focusing on them all that much lately however one person who participated in both the Artur Pawlowski organized "conference" on April 13 and City Hall rally on April 14 did catch my attention:

Dale Caldwell is a leader in the Calgary Soldiers of Odin group. He both created and acts as one of the two administrators for the Calgary SoO Facebook group:

In the group, one can find the usual sort of posts one would expect to find in an anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim, and anti-government hate group:

"Elvis SoO" with Sandra Solomon and Jesse Wielenga in background
The Calgary SoO also has a pre-existing relationship with Sandra Solomon:

Caldwell has two Facebook profiles. The first is mostly closed down but does contain some interesting content:

Part I: Racists, Homophobes, Misogynists, Islamophobes, and Sleepy Rob Anders Heading To Calgary April 13 - 15

A who's who of racists, homophobes, and Islamophobes will be in Calgary this Friday through Sunday to participate in an event organized by the Calgary Street Church, a group with ties to the World Wide Coalition Against Islam, III% militia, and Soldiers of Odin; at least two of the Street Church's supporters have some connection with Kyle McKee of Blood & Honour.

Okay, "who's who" might be stretching it a wee bit. Basically they are mostly the same schlubs that ARC has been covering for years now:

Well if that isn't a ringing endorsement I don't know what is.

The head of the Street Church Artur Pawlowski is organizing the event and is touted as one of the "special guests." Other guests are included in a poster published by Pawlowski:

Oh, former Reform/Canadian Alliance/Conservative Member of Parliament Rob Anders.... are you really THIS desperate? You had more dignity as a plant for James Inhofe during his run for senate in 1994:

Yeah, Rob Anders, a man consistently named the worst MP by all parties during his time in Parliament and embarrassment personified, is one of the guests. So Is Kevin J. Johnston, a man currently up on hate crime charges and whom this blog recently profiled regarding one of the more ugly misogynistic rants this writer has witnessed in some time.

Sandra Solomon will also be speaking and while her stature amongst her fellow Islamophobes has taken a hit over the past several months given her divisiveness, stunts like what she pulled in late March as well as more recently would certainly make her a welcome guest in this particular crowd.

Regarding the first incident in which Solomon tore pages from a Koran (placing them on the windows of cars in a mosque parking lot) and then entered at least one mosque to berate worshipers, Solomon posted a video response which I won't publish because, dear god, she is long-winded:

But her video did bring up another person of interest who, while not a "special guest" also appears to be planning on attending the Calgary event this weekend:

Well doesn't he just ooze charm?

Rick Boswick is the current Vice-president of the ridiculously named Canadian Combat Coalition. Here he is with Solomon talking about the event in Calgary:

Rick is currently crashing at Solomon's place. Prior to the video above, he posted a profane, misogynistic, and unhinged rant in which he admits to having plead to charges related to a death threat and harassment because, you know, of course he did:

Have I mentioned that these are the same folks who think the government should permit people to carry concealed weapons?

There are others who I expect to attend. Evidently Steven Myatt will be in Calgary to speak to "legal experts" concerning his efforts to charge Trudeau with treason, or sue him, or something. Really, Myatt is becoming increasingly unclear as to what his motives are. And Ryan Dean may very well show up.

In short, we'll see what happens
