Ann Coulter. Whatever.

She also criticized the media for being liberal and Democrats for whining about their rights under the First Amendment.
"They're always accusing us of repressing their speech," she said. "I say let's do it. Let's repress them."

She later added, "Frankly, I'm not a big fan of the First Amendment."

So said the hero of Canadian speechies (and a woman we think Ed Kennedy would like to father children with given how he fawns over her) Ann Coulter during a speech in Gainesville, Florida in 2005. This quote, as well as others even more detestable, have been repeated ad nauseum during the last couple of days as Coulter engages in her speaking tour of Canadian universities.

As we write this article, Ms. Coulter is about to take the stage at the University of Calgary. Well, not the university itself. She's now speaking off-campus for security reasons based on claims that she felt threatened in Ottawa, resulting in the cancellation of her speech there; this cancellation has sent the speechies into an apoplectic rage as they demand heads roll.

We know we should care about Ms. Coulter. She writes and says things that are vile, hate-filled and disturb every sense of civil discourse. We should be frothing at the mouth in rage that "Coultergeist" has even been let into Canada.

But...... we're not.

Not even a little bit.

Now don't get us wrong. We believe that what Coulter writes and says is everything that people say it is and people have a right to exercise their freedom of speech to denounce and oppose her and her rhetoric.

Problem is, we're not entirely sure Coulter believes what she writes or says either.

We remember when Coulter was just one of a number of political talking heads making the rounds on t.v. news and talk shows in the late 1990s. We were first introduced to Coulter as a semi-regular on the Bill Mahr program, "Politically Incorrect." At the time, there was really little to distinguish Coulter from any of the other political talking heads on both the left and the right. She was, in retrospect, extraordinary by how absolutely ordinary she was. She was a generic conservative, often picked to "debate" a generic liberal. She acted the way other conservative pundits acted. Spoke from the same script. Really, the only time she actually stood out to any of us is when she was rocking the eye patch for a while.

Being a political pundit in the United States is a bit dog eat dog. If you want to have any staying power, you have to find some sort of gimmick (Tucker Carlson's bow tie as a somewhat nerdy case in point). Once you have your gimmick and you achieve a certain level of notoriety with the base you're appealing to, then that's when you get your own talk show on FOX (if you're a conservative) or MSNBC (if you're a liberal). Or, if you're aren't consistently capable of hosting a full hour of television, you write books. But these are relatively rare considering the number of talking heads that are out in the media trying to get their big break. Most end up back working as junior partners at small law firms, a fate that Coulter could easily have fallen into herself.

So, what is a generic conservative pundit to do if he or she doesn't want to start punching a regular clock? In Coulter's case, things didn't look very promising. He grasp of policy was (and still is) weak. She was moderately attractive, though not as much as she'd like to think, but there were a lot of other more attractive pundits so that gimmick wasn't exactly unique. But Coulter did come up with one that has turned out to be a gravy train that just won't stop.

Ms. Coulter decided the best way to gain a significant fan base was to write and say the most outrageous, shocking, intolerant, ignorant, insulting rhetoric she could think of. And it has worked, and continues to work, beautifully.

Coulter has been wildly successful by appealing to the ugliest parts of her fan base's intellect and emotion. This approach has made her an embarrassment to mainstream conservatives (she's been fired as a columnist for a number of conservative publications), but her admirers eat it up. She's made millions on books with simple titles (simple titles for simple minds perhaps): Treason. Godless. Slander. Guilty. All in an effort to manipulate the base emotions of her mostly male readers (right down to the slinky, formfitting dresses she models on the covers) who already are inclined to believe that Democrats, liberals and progressives are not people with whom they have they fundamentally disagree with on a variety of issues, but as a cancer in the body politic that needs to be destroyed with extreme prejudice. She's helped contribute to a polarized political environment in her own country in which civil discourse is not only rejected, but stomped into the mud.

And she's laughing all the way to the bank because she's managed to fool the rubes who really think she believes what she writes and says.

Take the current controversy that has the speechies frothing at the mouth. Ms. Coulter cancelled her speech at the University of Ottawa because of the threat posed by protesters. As Kady O'Malley, Scott Tribe, and Dr. Dawg have pointed out, it seems just a bit contrived. Sort of like something a controversial speaker and writer would do to drum up controversy. And has it worked! As an example, by our last count, there was something like 15 threads on Free Dominion concerning the cancellation of the speech in Ottawa. And boy are they pissed! Hell, this beats the 7 threads they had created last month attacking us for a postering campaign started by a completely different group.

Add to this that Ms. Coulter plans to file a human rights complaint against François Houle who had the temerity to ask Ms. Coulter to please be respectful and show restraint. Only people who love Ann could view that mild mannered email as a hate crime, but such is the power of Coultergeist.

Anyone want to bet if she sells out her speaking engagement in Calgary given the free publicity she's getting?

Now in Calgary, Ms. Coulter isn't above continuing to use the cancellation of the event in Ottawa to create controversy and, thus, more publicity to put bums in the seats and people buying her books. Now she's clumsily attempts to use regional tensions to further her efforts:

"It's quite a country you have here," Coulter told Evan Solomon, host of Power & Politics, on CBC News Network on Thursday. "I'm more determined than ever to turn pretty much from Calgary through the west into the 51st state now. We got to save the good Canadians."

"Save us from what, Ann?" Solomon asked.

"From the crazy liberals. From the crybabies," Coulter answered, sporting sunglasses. "How did Canada go from being the country that sends us all our best comedians to a bunch of whining, crying babies that can't take a joke?"

And though most people, including conservatives, will reject this view, it will have it's support in the Canadian branch of the Coulter fan club.

Coulter went on to say this about freedom of speech in Canada:

"I have discovered that Canada's approach to free speech, and that is speech they like," Coulter said Thursday. "It's not free speech if they are going to say, 'Yes, you can have free speech as long as you don't say X, Y, Z.'"

When asked what her message to Canadians was, Coulter answered: "It's a lovely little country. I do recommend that you get free speech. It's a lot of fun."

From the sound of things, you're going to be in luck Ms. Coulter. It appears that there will be a number of people who will be exercising their freedoms as they protest your presence in Calgary. And we don't expect you or Ezra or Mark or the FreeDom crowd to complain because, well, it's just not free speech if you only allow the speech that you agree with. Right?

However, as far as we know, no one in the ARC Collective will be participating in the Calgary protests. We do support those who will peacefully voice their displeasure with Ms. Coulter and her views, but we think we'll sit this one out.

Instead, most of us are going to stay home and do what poor Ann and her empty, dusty womb will not be able to do tonight.

We're spending time with our wives, husbands, girlfriends, boyfriends and children. With people we love, and who on good days love us (and on bad days must love us more for putting up with our shit).

And with that, so ends our contribution to the plethora of blogs, forums and news sites that have managed to find themselves involved in the Coulter hysteria. And it does end because we've got better things to do.

Fairness Fairy: Secret Agent Man (or Woman..... But Likely Man)

And who might this, "Fairness Fairy" be? We'll get to that soon, but please, read on.

We've been aware of the online presence of the "Fairness Fairy" and his (or her) blog for some time. The blog has claimed to be providing information on the Marc Lemire hearings but aside from sexually degrading women and antisemitic rhetoric, it really hasn't offered really anything new. However, recently there was a big reveal. The "Fairness Fairy" is, according to the author, a CHRC mole.

Oh, we mean whistleblower. Our bad.

Our avid reader Jay Currie promptly posted the article on his blog and then scampered to Free Dominion to spread the good news:

Not long after, Mr. Kathy Shaidle chimed in on the subject on his blog:
Uppierdate: Rumours afoot of a possible Op-Ed by the "Whistleblower" in a major paper
Upperdate: This just gets curiouser and curiouser, here's the promised post by our self-described "Whistleblower".
Now, while many of the FreeDom denizens are rejoicing at the prospect of someone with inside the operations willing and eager to bring the whole thing down, not all is happy in Whoville. Some who have decided to turn on the logic portion of their brains are justifiably suspicious by this new claim by "Fairness Fairy." Others are downright disgusted:

So where does "Narrow Back's" ire come from? We'll allow him to explain in his own words and using direct quotes from the "Fairness Fairy" blog:

So What's New With the FreeDom Folks?

We make a point of not visiting Free Dominion too often. Frankly, it gives us all headaches. But we did take a gander a few days ago. It appears that resident crazy uncle Edward Kennedy had (another) visit from the RCMP around September 17:

Isn't life exciting? I was contacted by, and agreed to a meeting with the RCMP earlier this evening in regards to a complaint from the inhuman rights commission. Poor babies, it seems they want to be immune from any criticism of their persecution of victims and imposition of their politically correct bs.

The constable was reasonable and pleasant to talk to during the investigation, and I gave him a lengthy statement over the issue.

I will post a review of what transpired and what was said, tomorrow and am sending the same message now to these clowns that I sent back in my statement. I am NOT going to stop exercising my freedom of expression and I am not nor will I be intimidated by the fat asses sitting on their heated thrones, thinking they can rule the wortld of thought.

More tomorrow, I am tired, and need to sleep. Working for a living does that to you, but then the arses at the hrc would not know about that. Half a day's work would kill these pompous pampered pathetic peons of pitiful political correctness.

Ed later provides more detail about the encounter:

...and now for the sequence of events.

The general public is and has been aware of my total contempt and disdain for hrc's far and wide, openly voiced here and in real life. One cannot love freedom, democracy and justice without hating the alter, and in my observations of their bullying and totalitarian tactics, my disgust and anger was, is and WILL be apparent.

The RCMP called me late afternoon yesterday and asked if they could visit me, to which I agreed immediately. However, I thought this visit had to do with an investigation over a recent filed complaint I made with the Police Services Commission over violation of oath and code, abuse of system, and duplicity/partiality of several Renfrew OPP officers.

It was interesting when I started the conversation, leading off on that note, when I realized the issue was a complaint by the crybabies at the hrc who did not like me to be so critical of their attacks on justice, democracy and freedom.

The officer made it clear this was an official investigation and read me my rights, which I summarily dismissed and invited him to bring out a tape recorder if he had one in his pack, which he did, and turn it on.

When he did I made a statement about my right to freedom of expression and I made it clear that I would not desist in any way in exercising this freedom fought for in the last Great Wars, also mentioning that I had relatives who had shot better people than hrc tyrrants.

The officer indicated this was about comments made on the "Lemire" case but I corrected this by stating every case I have observed in the jungle of hrc defecation to be similar and an attack on freedom, justice and democracy so my comments and criticisms applied to everything they had touched and defiled. He asked if I used any other computer and I stated the truth that I used only the one in my study. The initial session lasted about twenty minutes after which we had conversations off the record about the fascism of the "Places to Grow Act" wherein the lieberals had written into the act that no compensation would be allowed for landowners and that redress before the courts was made illegal. When a provincial government takes away the basic right to a man's day in court the best word for that is FASCISM and FASCISTS.

Anyway, this material will be taken to his supervisor and then to Ottawa where an official will make a decision. I think that this issue falls under "Section 59" that prohibits intimidation/threats of the hrc's, right after the part where they are given entitlement to special soft toilet paper and mandatory "bidets" in their sheltered existences. Seems that they have yet to learn that as public figures, they are subject to criticism and ridicule. Respect must be earned, and what these self important pitiful excuses for people see to not have learned is nobody, myself included, can be mandated by decree to bow down at their feet and worship their pathetic personages. I think they are a waste of human air and skin.

The issue is strictly one of interpretation and these inquisitors had better learn quickly that what I say and what their paranoid minds read into it are generally two different things. NOBODY has the right to tell me what I mean by what I say and to impose on my words their own fairy tale interpretations.

I asked the Constable to take a message to them, that they can have their fat asses transported to the local OPP station a few miles from here and under the security of the whole detachment, replete with armaments, I will entertain their questions BUT I reserve the right to ask my own. It will be I will answer one of their every time they answer one of mine.

Now how is that for a deal? We will see what they say in return. To be sure, though, I will offer no respect for a bunch of overpaid fat assed politically correct underworked busybodies who think they can impose their warped and tainted ideologies on others, least of all me.

Stay tuned, I could get lucky, they might tyake me up on my offer of the meeting. Hope though they do not mind me wearing my sawdust covered workclothes, I only dress up for suitable occasions.

Kennedy is a fan favourite over on the FreeDom boards so not surprisingly the denizens of the forum jump to his defense. Then again, as we've written earlier, Kennedy isn't exactly a stranger when it comes to over the top language which may be viewed as threatening and an act of intimidation:

But not to fear, Kennedy fans. Edward claims that he has "good people around him":

Well here is the deal Red. There is always a comeback and retribution to those who impose injustice, and it is always more than that given. I have good people around me, today I addressed a public meeting with Randy Hillier as guest speaker, Jack MacLaren, president of the OLA, and Scott Reid who was also scheduled but could not come due to the early return to parliament.

I spoke an hour and mc'ed the meeting, my theme was "Justice Democracy and Freedom". I addressed many issues as well as the hrc fascists. Randy mentioned the hrc problem. I had told a key OLA member about the hrc thing and was called and asked about it by top OLA brass without telling anyone else. Randy Hillier called me and asked about it before the meeting today where we both spoke.

Needless to say, the boys are not pleased. This is an intimidation tactic that is not intimidating anyone, but will have the opposite effect, and when I am told who is the whiner, the shite will hit the fan.

And just so Kennedy, a man who has posted comments about, "typical n****** behavior" and who has celebrated the murder of a doctor, is aware, here is the info on intimidation and discrimination:

59. No person shall threaten, intimidate or discriminate against an individual because that individual has made a complaint or given evidence or assisted in any way in respect of the initiation or prosecution of a complaint or other proceeding under this Part, or because that individual proposes to do so.

Possible punishment if found guilty is:

Offence

60. (1) Every person is guilty of an offence who

...

(c) contravenes subsection 11(6) or 43(3) or section 59.

Punishment

(2) A person who is guilty of an offence under subsection (1) is liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding $50,000.

In other FreeDom news, we heard from a friend of a friend who knows a guy that one of the John Does have filed his defense in the Warman libel suit against the John Does, the Fourniers, and FreeDom. And while we aren't aware of the particulars of the defense, we're sure it will be as successful as the last libel suit Mr. Warman was involved in.

Four of the Free Dominion "John Does" Have Been Identified

Continuing our focus on FreeDom (and enjoying the reaction of the likes of Edward Kennedy) we've learned that four of the anonymous forum posters named in Richard Warman's civil suit have been identified:

Roger Smith (a.k.a. "Peter O'Donnell")
Jason Bertucci (a.k.a. "Faramir")
Andrew ******** (a.k.a. "Droid 1963")
Dan LePage (a.k.a. "SaskBigPicture")

We've been sitting on this for a few days now but we have been reading the fallout on FreeDom:

Since the folks at FreeDom are super smart, Mark Fournier has jumped to the conclusion that the identification of these individuals must be the result of nefarious activities on the part of Mr. Warman:

Well, since you asked so nicely Mr. Fournier, here's how their identities became known spelled out nicely in Mr. Warman's most recent affidavit:

We've likely redacted more than we actually needed to, but just to be on the safe side...

Now, let the fun begin.

UPDATE: Bloody hilarious. Evidently ARC is an insignificant failure and no one pays attention to us, however within half an hour of our posting the article there was a mention of it on FreeDom and Connie bumped up an old thread that complained about our having commented on her and Mark shaking hands with Fromm and his wife (while we were going to let this go when she first accused us of being hypocritical, we think we will discuss this in greater depth at a later date). We certainly didn't let them know we had posted it, so it would seem that some of their own readers have at least a passing interest in what is written on this blog.

And, get this. Now some of them are making up quotes and attributing them to ARC:

Maikeru: 'Since we [ARC] have yet to address the situation in Gaza, it might be a good idea to explain what our position on the entire Arab-Jewish conflict is so people can understand. The way we see it, if Jews and Arabs can't seem to come to a peaceful solution to their problems after thousands of years of fighting, we most certainly aren't going to be able to contribute anything of value. Gentiles and other people who are neither Jewish or Arab who want to exploit the troubles in the Middle East for whatever political or financial agenda they have should be hauled off and shot.'

Now, we assume that 'Makeru' is referring to our statement regarding our stance on the Palestinian and Israeli conflict and the unwelcome involvement of the Aryan Guard and some extremist Muslims. We invite our readers to examine our article and determine whether or not we wrote what was attributed to us. Of course a simple Google search will show that the quote attributed to us originated on the FreeDom forums and not here on this website. If our position on the crisis in Gaza appeared anywhere else on the Internet and if there was any editorializing by the person who republished our position, we do not necessarily support their ideas.

Free Dominion claims to be, "the voice of principled conservatism." We invite our readers to determine the accuracy of that claim.

Thank you FreeDom for making our day. We had a great laugh about this. Please keep it up.

UPDATE 2: Back from our mini vacation. We redacted slightly more information on the final page of the affidavit regarding one of the John Doe's family members (although there was no mention of a name in the unredacted section, it did discuss a family relationship).

Aren't we nice?

Murder of American Abortion Provider Celebrated on Free Dominon Boards

Abortion providor Dr. George Tiller was murdered yesterday. The alleged murderer, 51 year old Scott Roeder, has links to both the Montana Freemen and to the Christian Identity movement.

While the murder of Dr. Tiller has been condemned by many, including numerous mainstream anti-abortion advocates, some who are opposed to reproductive rights have not only not condemned cold blooded murder, but have actually celebrated it. Among that group are some of the denizens of FreeDom with the shrillest voice and chief cheerleader being Edward Kennedy:

There's more, and much of it is worse than this. If you've the stomach, you can read the information directly from the FreeDom forum.

To be fair there are a few on this FreeDom thread who have condemned the murder (even some who oppose reproductive rights have voiced their disgust with the murder of Dr. Tiller) which has resulted in being subjected to the wrath of Kennedy and others who applaud the murder. But since Kennedy is a racist, misogynist kook, we wouldn't let that cause us to loose much sleep.

Interstingly, as of the writting of this article, the Fourniers have yet to jump into the fray. We're pretty sure that Mark and Connie are opposed to reproductive rights and we don't fault them if they hold that position even if most of us happen to disagree. What we're interested in is if they want their website to continue to be used as a forum for extremist views like that which Mr. Kennedy, Yoda and others adhere to.

Our Position on the Situation in Gaza, Then Our Comment on the Aryan Guard's Participation in the Gaza Rally in Calgary

Jewish Prayer for Peace

Come let us go up the mountain of the Lord,
That we may walk the
paths of the Most High.
And we shall beat our swords into ploughshares,

And our spears into pruning hooks.
Nation shall not lift up sword against nation--

Neither shall they learn war any more.

And none shall be afraid,
For the mouth of the
Lord of Hosts has spoken.

Odds and Ends: Special Holiday Update

Well we've had about all the turkey and Christmas cheer we can stand. How about a few updates?

First, we mentioned in an earlier, though now archived, article how the Aryan Guard may have stolen their Activist Values from Volksfront International's Ideals and Values page which considering the hostility between the two groups is more than a bit ironic(see here and here). Well Bill Noble, who we have to mention once again has not yet been returned to prison for flagrant violations of the terms of his release, has an explanation:

Noble is walking a pretty thin line here. On the one hand while the Aryan Guard (or what is left of it) is engaged in a war of words with Volksfront, Noble himself is friendly with a number of people in or associated with Volksfront in one way or another (Todd Conroy, Ciaran Donnelly, Glenn Bahr). Trying to keep the peace between two angry pitbulls that hate each other. In fact, we wonder what the Aryan Guard members think of Noble's frendliness with members and/or associates of Volksfront, the "A" brothers notwithstanding (though one source close to both D.A. and E.A. say that neither are members or are linked to Volksfront). Add to this he had to make this post on the Combat18 message boards, a group violently opposed to Volksfront, and justify plagiarism. Finally, he casually throws RN, who was the first webmaster of the Aryan Guard website before his own legal issues under the bus. How quick these people are to pass the blame on to someone else.

Don't @#$% With Richard Warman: Part II

As we mentioned earlier this week, Fromm's appeal of a November 2007 ruling that he had libeled Richard Warman was thrown out of court with an additional costs of $10,000 on top of the $30,000 in court costs. The reasoning for the decision appears to be as follows:

- The material in question was clearly capable of being defamatory
- The trial judge found that they were in fact defamatory
- There is no basis for us [the appeals court] to interfere with trial judge's findings
- In the material it is impossible to distinguish between fact vs. opinion (one of the pre-conditions for the defence in libel cases of 'fair comment' that they were trying to advance)
- Justice Metivier's finding of malice on the part of Fromm/CAFE was soundly based in the evidence and there is no basis to interfere with it
- Thus the appeal must fail
