Doug Christie: The Truth Will Out (Part I)

When deciding where to start our discussion of the late Doug Christie's views on race, we decided that we would start with the political sphere. Christie was a long-time Western separatist. He was a leader of the Western Canada Concept Party (WCC) as well as the Western Block Party which Christie founded in 2005 (Ontario resident Paul Fromm ran as a Western Block candidate in Calgary during the last election as a result of a persona vendetta. He did quite poorly). An examination of the WCC platform is, in itself, quite telling particularly points 4, 5, and 6: 

4. An end to immigration to preserve our environment, culture and stability.  

5. Equal rights for all, with no special status for any race, or ethnic origin.  

6. Preservation of our Christian culture and European heritage. 

These three points contain boilerplate language that one might find on a number of right-wing publications and websites. The points also contradict each other. In essence, the platform argues for equality and against, "special status for any race, or ethnic group" while at the same time assigning special status to, "Christian culture and European heritage." It is further implied that immigration, particularly non-European immigration, needs to cease primarily due to the danger it poses to the hegemony of, "Christian culture and European heritage" in Western Canada.

More telling though were Christie's own views, more specifically how he expressed those views. For a number of years, the WCC published, "The Western Separatist Papers" newsletter, edited by Christie's wife. Christie had a regular column, "A Separatist Speaks" in which he discusses a number of issues related to his desire for an independent Western Canada. Of particular note was Christie's preoccupation with immigration from the "Third World" and the threat it posed to Westerners:

Massive influx of non-European immigrants of cultures totally alien to our traditional culture. Schools have to open late in Toronto to accommodate Jewish new years. Now Muslims want the same treatment naturally. Someone writes that it may be right to have Christian employees work more hours than "minority" religious workers. The affirmative action policies of the Ontario government already mean that 90% of all new jobs must go to non-white males. But about 50% of the new work force who are now in school are white males. So what does the government official say when asked what it all means to the future of thousands of able-bodied white male schoolchildren? He replied that the new law was "balancing the scales of justice and whether you like it or not, folks, it's coming."

The whole Canadian way of life is sick. Our European heritage is being progressively undermined while a whole range of other cultures are being promoted. The essence of the new culture is tolerance, tolerance of anything. The crime in Canada continues to increase and become more and more violent as the attitudes of the Third World become the attitudes of our streets. Violence is becoming racial while Ottawa demands that whites be silent about it or be labeled [sic] racist.

The above, as well as the following excerpt (here), are both indicative of a siege mentality:

Some immigrants are quietly going about building their beachheads for the much larger invasion force to come. The west is being colonized by India, China and the Third World in a strange sort of reversal of 19th century imperialism. This phenomenon is the Liberals' revenge and Quebec's revenge on English Canada. These problems are creating a vast underground economy of discontent in the European-descended population of Western Canada.

We wrote earlier that we will not speak ill of the dead, but that doesn't mean we will be complacent when many in the media whitewash Doug Christie's history, portraying him as someone who selflessly fought for people's right to speak freely and hold unpopular opinions. We've always said that our problem with Christie was not his defence of people who's views, (and in many cases actions, such as this recent case) were reprehensible, but that he held the same views as his clients. That remains as true now as it was when he was alive.

But then again we really haven't done a very good job of examining Christie or those views on this blog. In light of the efforts of some.... well.... revisionists who hope to bury a fairly lengthy historical record detailing Christie's ideological connection to his clients and supporters, we're going to attempt to provide an alternative (and we believe more accurate) point-of-view. And we will allow Christie himself to write that history.

We suspect that this effort may take a while, so much like our expose on Marc Lemire, we are going write a series of articles that we hope will provide a clearer picture of Doug Christie and his views.

Doug Christie, defence lawyer in controversial cases, dies at 66

We won't speak ill of the dead. This writer hopes that when his time approached, any suffering was minimized as much as medically possible and that Christie's last moments with his family were ones well spent.

But, from a practical point of view, we do wonder have to start to consider who will take on the types of clients Mr. Christie was famous for representing?

Time will tell.

According to Fromm, Christie's Prognosis is Quite Dire

Fromm posted the following on his Facebook account earlier today:

Lawyers like Gerry Spence, someone this writer admires a great deal, defended individuals he didn't agree with but who he believed deserved a fair trail. Our issue with Christie was never his defence of the likes of Topham, Tremaine, Zundel, Fromm, Droege, and others their ilk, but with his affinity and support of beliefs of his clients. That is his legacy and it can't be whitewashed.

That being said, and while some of our readers may take issue with this writer for what I'm about to say here now, but if Christie has only 6 months I hope the time he has left is spent with his family (he still has young children). I hope that he uses the time to reflect his life and perhaps reconsider his views. And, when the time comes, he passes on with as little suffering as possible.

I don't celebrate death, even for those mentioned on this blog. I hope for redemption and believe people can change. And this applies to Doug Christie as well.

Christie Drops Out of Topham Case for Medical Reasons

Found the following posted to Topham's website:

“Dear Arthur:
  I regret to advise that Mr. Christie has been diagnosed with an advanced form of liver cancer, and has received medical advice that he cannot practice law any further at the present time. In these circumstances, it will be necessary for you to seek other counsel as soon as possible.”

Doug Christie had been rumored to be in poor health for some time now. Specifically, he was believed to have been suffering from prostate cancer. If that's true case, the cancer appears to have spread to his liver. And if he is dropping clients, it leads us to conclude that his long-term prognosis isn't good.

This writer had an uncle who died as a result of liver cancer and, based on that experience, knows that it is a hell of a way to go.

Time will tell how this affects Topham's case moving forward.

Topham Continues Posting Antisemitic Screeds

The wheels of justice turn slowly. But they do continue to turn in the case of Arthur Topham. BCL recently noted that the Crown is not going to allow Topham to turn the court into a circus by allowing him to use it as a venue to air his antisemitic conspiracy theories.

Also of interest, it appears that the Crown will be using the Noble case (R. V. Noble) as a model for sentencing (here and here). So if convicted, Topham will be looking at 6 months incarceration followed by three years of close supervision.... though we do have to note that Noble repeatedly violated the terms of his release during his three years of close supervision with seeming impunity.

A Saskatchewan man who refused to stop posting racist messages on websites is going to jail.

On Wednesday, a Federal Court judge sentenced Terry Tremaine of Regina to at least 30 days in jail for acting in contempt of an order of the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal.

On Monday we had suggested that we would likely learn what Terry Tremaine's sentence for contempt would be, however that obviously didn't happen.

Sometimes we look at the decisions made by the judiciary and shake our heads in wonder.

White supremacist can seek help online in attempt to prove racist claims: court

Facing charges for online hate speech, a Regina neo-Nazi leader has been given a judge’s permission to go back online to white supremacist websites for help in proving that the anti-Semitic and racist comments are true.

Back on June 14, we briefly mentioned that Dr. Dawg had won his appeal and that the case would now go to trial.

We don't want to argue the merit of the arguments involved, but we can't help but notice the odd assortment of characters who have lined up over the past year to support the Fourniers in this case.

When Dawg first filed his suit, Paulie chimed in with his support for the Fourniers:

Response to the Demise of Sec. 13 in "Maclean's"

Earlier today, we were contacted by "Maclean's" and asked about our take on the demise of Sec. 13. We responded as follows:

We think that the government was incredibly short sighted in their decision to eliminate Sec. 13. It was a useful and cost-effective tool in the effort to eliminate some very vile, hateful, and potentially dangerous rhetoric online and in the public sphere. Now we have only the criminal code which, in a few cases, is like using a machete when a scalpel would have been more prudently utilized. 

Those individuals and groups who were called before the Human Rights Tribunal and who were found to have violated Sec. 13 were not innocent lambs who were victimized by Big Brother. They were people and groups who were causing real harm in their communities. Their words did result in harm, and I don't mean hurt feelings. People's homes were vandalized. People have been assaulted. And these criminal acts had, in many cases, began with the dehumanization of fellow Canadians for no other reason than their ethnicity, religion, gender and sexual orientation. 

The people who are celebrating this are the extremists on Stormfront and VNN and a host of other racist webforums, but as we wrote on our blog they should consider that now there is only the criminal code and the penalties are more severe than anything Sec. 13 dished out. It should also be noted that racists aren't content with only Sec. 13. Paul Fromm, for instance, has said he and his group will next focus their attention on the criminal code sections regarding hate crimes.

We get the impression that the "Maclean's" in which Sec. 13 will be discussed is coming out this week. We don't expect that our entire response will be published, or if any of it will be for that matter, but if it is we thought we'd include the entirely of our response here.

Arthur Topham Arrested

Not sure of the details, but boneheads  are claiming online that Arthur Topham was arrested this past Wednesday:

Arthur Topham, publisher of the Radical Press website, was arrested on May 16, 2012, at 11:30 am on the Barkerville Highway near Quesnel, B.C., put in handcuffs and taken to jail. Apparently, Arthur’s home had been staked out for quite some time by the RCMP.

Christie and Macdonald Confronted During Court Appearance

First, we got to say Shawn, you aren't fooling anyone with that beard.

We're not claiming that he's looks like Saddam Hussein. We're just noting that in this picture, Shawn bares a striking similarity to the late Iraqi dictator.

Oh, we guess we are saying that he looks like Hussein. Just a little. Right?

Vancouver Anti-Racists Confront Neo-Nazi at Court Appearance

Approximately 25 anti-racists attended the Friday, January 27, court appearance of Shawn MacDonald (39), a member of the neo-Nazi group Blood and Honour charged with three assaults against people of colour in the Vancouver area. 

Update on Macdonald Court Appearance

We were sent this a few moments ago:

Shawn MacDonald's court appearance delayed till 1:30 pm today (same courtroom 307 at 222 Main). He has plead not guilty to the hate crimes and they are setting trial dates (he elected for a judge and jury). His lawyer is infamous/notorious far-right libertarian Doug Christie who has a history of defending white supremacists and neo-Nazis (Keegstra, Zundel, Collins, Fromm etc).

In addition to this, the individual who originally posted this message also stated she received an email from someone trying to intimidate her into being silent.

From what we know about this woman, that ain't happening. For the benefit of our bonehead readers, does the term, "chew you up and spit youu out" mean anything to you?

Abrams is Part of ARC???

On Saturday, we published an article speculating that Marc Lemire, or at least his wife, isn't pleased with Paul Fromm using Lemire's Sec. 13 fight to fundraise off of, since another poster also implied that the money raised in other cases may not have reached those for who the money was originally intended.

One of our most faithful readers, Maikeru, focused on a photograph we included of Fromm and Lemire together. Originally posted by Fromm on his open Facebook account, he originally labelled it as originating at the "George Orwell Dinner" awards ceremony honoring the Fourniers (though, truth be told, it ain't an honor we would be proud to receive). Maikeru then accused us of three things, but we'll start with the second and third accusations.

The second thing we were accused of was "document tampering" which, given we didn't do anything to the photo itself and were simply providing a label that one of the attendees of the dinner and awards ceremony had ascribed to it sort of leaves us scratching our heads a little.

Connie herself erroneously claims we are engaging in witness tampering for talking about Lemire on these pages who is apparently their witness in Richard Warman's lawsuit against the Fourniers as the third accusation. We actually didn't know this before Connie first wrote about it a while back in making the same accusation against us then, but we can assure Ms. Fournier that we would be absolutely delighted if Mr. Lemire were to testify under oath, especially if the cross examination asked him certain questions about his past he would like to deny. But no, we are not trying to intimidate him or anyone.Trust us, once we knew that you planned on calling him as a witness we have all been very eager for Lemire to testify and have been ever since.

The first accusation though, now that we think about it, wasn't so much an accusation against us but against Harry Abrams whom Maikeru is now claiming is part of our little Collective here. And while hanging out with us is actually pretty fun (we have, "make your own sunday" Sundays here... oh, that reminds us that we need more sprinkles and rum n' butter syrup) and isn't something we think one should be ashamed of.


But we decided to contact Mr. Abrams, whom we haven't had any contact with for some time sadly (because we quite like him and his YouTube videos shows he plays a mean accordion) and  let him know that Maikeru has claimed him as being amongst the Collective. Yesterday, Mr. Abrams sent us the following message:

Well it's that time of year when Doug Christie hosts yet another misnamed George Orwell Free Speech Award Dinner (misnamed not in the sense that Orwell opposed freedom of speech, but in that as a committed socialist opposed to totalitarianism in all it's forms, he would likely be disgusted that his name was being used to honour people who share the same ideology he risked his life opposing during the Spanish Civil War). Past, ehem... winners of this, uhm.... prestigious award include Marc Lemire, Ernst Zundel, Paul Fromm, Doug Collins, James Keegstra, Malcolm Ross and, our good friends and faithful readers, the Fourniers, among others.

Ian Verner Macdonald and Doug Christie Appeal Unsuccessful

The CBC and Mr. Kinsella successfully defended themselves against Ian Macdonald's appeal of his unsuccessful libel action against them. Kinsella wrote on his blog that the Ontario Court of Appeal listened to Christie, but didn't ask to hear from the CBC's or Kinsella's lawyers. The Court then upheld the costs of $180,000 and added another $25,000 for the appeal.

We might suggest that Macdonald quit while he's.... well.... not ahead, but before he falls even further behind.

Court temporarily stays hate speech charge

A conditional stay has been granted to Terrence Cecil Tremaine, the former university lecturer accused of promoting hatred.

Tremaine appeared at Regina Court of Queen's Bench earlier this week, at which time B.C.-based lawyer Doug Christie and court services representative Graeme Mitchell advised Justice Peter Whitmore there are still issues with Tremaine's application for court-appointed counsel.

Christie was previously made court appointed lawyer for the purposes of Tremaine's preliminary hearing, and is now looking to be appointed for the trial - a date for which has yet to be set.

With issues regarding legal counsel yet to be worked out, Christie and Mitchell suggested Whitmore issue a conditional, or temporary, stay until counsel is in place and funded - a remedy that can be used under the charter to ensure an accused's right to fair trial is met.

Tremaine, a former math lecturer at the University of Saskatchewan, previously elected to be tried by a judge and jury. The case returns to court in mid-July.

Terry Tremaine is Appealing (Actually, CHRT is Appealing. Note Update. Then Point and Laugh At Us).

Well, not really appealing. In fact he's not at all attractive.

See what we did there? Funny? Eh? EH?

No?

Bah! We long for the Golden Age of Comedy when a good knock-knock joke would delight theatres and all the great USO Shows Bob Hope was a part of!

Anyways, Tremaine is appealing the CHRT decision it would appear.
