Sec. 13 Dead.... For Now

NOTE: This is a little screen shot heavy. Be forewarned.

On June 26, Sec. 13 of the Human Rights Act cease to exist. As our friend BCL noted however there is no reason why Sec. 13, which was ruled constitutional by the Supreme Court, can not be brought back by a more enlightened government in the future. In the meantime the good folks at the now moribund Free Dominion have decided to post (a now rare) comment to celebrate the demise of Sec. 13:

It it isn't surprising that Connie would give props to Marc Lemire as Free Dominion had been on the forefront of the effort to rehabilitate Lemire's reputation, characterizing him as a free speech martyr. In fact, they went beyond this and engaged in a little bit of historical revisionism. Not only did they deny his role in the leadership of the Heritage Front from 2001 to 2005, they have all but denied that he had any significant history with the hate group. We have attempted to show them the error of their ways, but it seems they have decided to believe him rather than us. But then they aren't the only ones who have tried to help Lemire cover up a very shady past. Ezra Levant, in two interviews with Lemire, asked about the Heritage Front and did not challenge this response:

Uh, the Heritage Front uh, was active back in, uh, the the 90s and I was a young kid at the time. I had some, uh, interest in some of the things that they were doing in particularly thing like uh opposition to employment equity, things like reducing immigration. So I uh, listened to some of what they were about, and uh, I went away from it. I mean I was involved with them peripherally in my teenage years.

Well, that is partially true, as these articles indicate he was active with the Heritage Front in his teen years (he would have been 18 at the time of the 1993 photo and 19 when they were published):

Terry Tremaine Update

Not much to say about it, other than a desire to keep our readership in the loop:

Preliminary hearing begins for former university lecturer facing charge of promoting hatred

By Heather Polischuk, Leader-Post

REGINA — The lawyer for former university lecturer, Terrence Cecil Tremaine, referenced author George Orwell’s famed 1984 while railing against Canada’s hate laws.

Monday marked the start of Tremaine’s preliminary hearing at Regina Provincial Court on a charge of promoting hatred.

A preliminary hearing is held to determine whether the Crown has sufficient evidence to proceed to trial. Should the matter go to trial, Tremaine wishes to be tried by Court of Queen’s Bench judge and jury.

Details from the preliminary hearing can’t be reported because of a publication ban.

Outside of court, defence lawyer Doug Christie criticized anti-hate legislation when he spoke to media.

“I think (the laws are) a massive waste of police resources,” he said. “I think that they’re kind of like preventing crime by stopping people from thinking, because if you can stop people from talking, you should be able to stop them from thinking as well. As soon as we can find out what you’re thinking, we’ll be able to regulate that too. If anyone’s read 1984, you can see where that leads, and this is kind of a precursor of things to come.”

Christie called the sections “a vehicle for police to waste public money chasing political enemies.”
“Ultimately, I don’t think the state should be deciding what people say,” he said. “That should be, in a free and democratic society, open to people to decide for themselves.”

Christie said he worried Canada is becoming a police state under the pretense of combatting terrorism and that it should be up to individuals to decide what to think about statements made.

The Victoria-based lawyer previously defended former First Nations leader David Ahenakew on his hate crime charge, which was inevitably thrown out.

Crown prosecutor John Stoesser declined comment outside of court.

The hearing continues today before Judge Bruce Henning.

We're not sure that Eric Arthur Blair would appreciate his novel being used to justify the very fascism he sought to condemn in 1984 by the kind of people whom he fought in Spain.

Happy Canada Day

We're all spending time with our respective families, however we thought that we would direct our readers to BigCityLib and Dawg's Blawg, both of whom have written about the decision that Salman Hossain will not face criminal charges for advocating the killing of soldiers and the deportation of Jews from Canada. For those who suggest that the CHRC and CHRT are unnecessary and that such cases should proceed through the regular court system, we would like to present this as evidence refuting that assertion.

We've been accused of focusing on white supremecists only and ignoring people like Hossain. That's not entirely accurate. That said, hate is hate whether expressed by Bill Noble, Paul Fromm, David Ahenekew, or Salam Hossain.

We're going to keep an eye on this and see what happens. Stay tuned but, in the mean time, enjoy your bbq.

March 12 Bits and Bites Part IV: Christie Assisting Terry Tremaine

We reported that Terry Tremaine had been served with contempt of court charges for continual violation of the CHRT ruling from February 2, 2007. He's also currently on trial for violating Canadian Hate Crime laws. Any bets on who has taken on Tremaine's cause? You only have one guess:

Speaking of Doug Christie, apparently he's going to be performing soon in Ontario. We know this because this particular speaking engagement had originally been posted on the FreeDom forums:

Important News Soon to be Published

You have to appreciate having inside information about something big coming down the pipe that may very well rock some elements withing the Canadian "White Nationalist" movement to the core. Knowing that what is about to happen will occur so soon after David Ahenakew was found not guilty of promoting hatred towards Jews which has resulted in gloating by the likes of the Canadian Stormfront crew and VNN's Tomasz Winnicki, well, let us just say that we're going to really enjoy watching these same inviduals froth at the mouth with rage. It will be quite the show.

So what's going to happen, perhaps as soon as tomorrow?

This, ladies and gentlemen, is what is known as a cliff hanger. We promised not to shoot until we see the whites of their eyes.

Stay tuned.
